The ASANER Winter Short Course Championships were held at The Aquatics Centre, Sunderland, over the weekend of 5th/6th November. The event was split into two: the Age Group Championships; and the Youth and Senior Age Championships.
Day One
Age Group Championships
Jason Robson won gold in both the Boys 13 years 50m and 200m breaststroke events, gold in the 200 IM and he also found the energy to take bronze in the 100m freestyle.
Not to be outclassed by her brother, Emily Robson took gold in the Girls 13 years 50m breaststroke, fifth place in the 100m breaststroke, and 8th place in the 100m IM. Emily also secured a Top 20 placing in the 50m backstroke and 100m butterfly.
And then, of course, we have Simon Robson, who had Top 20 placings in the Boys 12 years 50m backstroke and 100m butterfly.
Well done to all The Robsons.
Mollie-Jo Garratt took double gold in the Girls 12 years 50m and 200m backstroke, and also picked up two Top 10 finishes, coming 4th in the 100 IM and 6th in the 100m butterfly.
Beth Gibbons had a trio of top 20 finishes: 6th in the Girls 13 years 100m butterfly; 11th in the 400m freestyle; and 14th in the 200m freestyle.
Samuel Pickup took two Top 20 spots: 9th in the Boys 12 years 200m butterfly; and 12th in the 200m breaststroke.
Also in the Boys 12 years age group, Toby Mayfield finished in a commendable 18th place in the 100m backstroke.
Oliver Creighton took an 8th place finish in the Boys 11 years 200m butterfly and came 14th in the 100m freestyle.
In the Girls 12 years age group, Megan Kirkman came 15th in the 100m IM, 20th in the 100m breaststroke and 29th in the 50m breaststroke.
Kimberley Thompson finished 25th in both the Girls 12 years 50m backstroke and the 100m butterfly.
Last, but not least, a trio of teenagers had some great swims this afternoon. In the Girls 13 years age group, Daisy Jackson came 16th in the 50m breaststroke, Abigail Young came 24th in the 100m IM and Alexandra Neale came 30th in the 100IM.
Senior/Junior Open Championships
Lucy Nicholson took silver in the Girls 16 years and over 800m Free.
Harry Devlin took silver in the 200m breaststroke and also touched in fourth place in the 50m breaststroke.
Eleanor Howcroft was 9th in the 100m breaststroke.
Also posting Top 20 times were: Amy Durrant, 10th in 800m Free; Neola Thorpe, 20th in the 100m butterfly; Lauren Roberts, 20th place in 100m butterfly; Nicola Merrett, 17th in 50m backstroke; Freya Beck, 18th in 200m backstroke; and Matthew Winnell, 11th in 100m backstroke .
Other YCBC swimmers who qualified for Saturdays events were Erin Wilkes, Jack Pears-Dorland, Bethan Morris, Joshua Mathias, George Hogg and Marcus Walker.
Day Two
Age Group Championships
Mollie-Jo Garrett won gold in in the Girls 12 years 100m backstroke, silver in the 50m butterfly, bronze in the 100m freestyle, and was 5th in the 50m freestyle and 6th in the 200 IM.
In the Boys 13 years age group, Jason Robson won double gold in the 100m breaststroke and the 400 IM, and silver in the 400m freestyle.
Samuel Pickup has another good day, posting PBs in the 100m breaststroke, 50m butterfly and 400m freestyle.
Beth Gibbons had another trio of Top 20 finishes in the Girls 13 years age group, with a 6th place 50m butterfly, 7th in the 800m freestyle and 11th in the 200 butterfly, plus a Top 30 finish in the 50m freestyle.
In the Boys 11 years age group, Oliver Creighton touched in 8th place in the 100m butterfly, 11th place in the 400m freestyle and still found the energy to place 26th in the 50m butterfly.
Again demonstrating Team YCBC’s strengths across all strokes, Emily Robson, 13, took 7th in the 200m breaststroke, 12th in the 50m butterfly and 23rd in the 50m freestyle. Kimberley Thompson, 12, took 8th in the 50m freestyle, 21st in the 100m back stroke and 24th in the 50m butterfly. Also in the Girls 12 years age group, Megan Kirkman came 13th in the 200m breaststroke and also finished well in the 50 butterfly and 200 IM.
In the Boys 12 years events, Thomas Scholefield was 13th in the 400m freestyle and 50m freestyle, 18th in the 100 IM and 26th in the 50m butterfly. Simon Robson came 13th in the 100m IM and 25th in the 50m butterfly and Toby Mayfield, adding to yesterday’s impressive run of results, came away with a 12th in the 100m IM, 17th in the 100m butterfly, 20th in the 100m breaststroke and 23rd in the 50m butterfly.
And last but not least, another trio of teens in the Girls 13 years age group, Abigail Young, Jessica Crosby and Lucy Jordan went head to head in the 50m butterfly, with Lucy just coming out on top. Abigail and Jessica also put in impressive performances in the 50m freestyle.
Senior/Junior Open Championships
Lucy Nicholson was 9th in the Girls 16 years and over 400 IM and 400m freestyle.
Harry Devlin was again on form to snatch silver in the 100m breaststroke.
Across the heats, our other Team YCBC swimmers also had a fantastic set of results. In the Girls 14 years age group, Eleanor Howcroft posted 11th in the 100m IM, 14th in the 400 IM, 16th in the 50m breaststroke, 28th in the 200m breaststroke and also finished strongly in the 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly. Ella Fisher, also in the Girls 14 years age group, touched in for two Top 20 times, coming 15th in the 400 IM and 20th in the 400m freestyle; she also competed in the 100 IM finishing 31st. In the Girls 15 years age group, Neola Thorpe, Amy Durrant, Genna Suddes and Erin Wilkes also qualified for the weekend’s competition and swam strongly getting times inside the Top Thirty in several races. Joshua Mathias was in the pool, competing in the 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke in the Boys 15 years age group. Nicola Merrett and Lauren Roberts swam in the Girls 16 years and over age group, Nicola taking 21st place in the 100m backstroke and Lauren claiming 17th place in the 200m butterfly. Both girls also competed in the 50m butterfly. Marcus Walker was in action in the 50m backstroke and 17 year old Katarina Bonner finished strongly in her races, with a 14th place in the 100 IM, 17th in the 100m backstroke and 29th in the 50m butterfly.
