A ten-strong York City Baths Club swimming team came home with an impressive 34 medals after competing in the Yorkshire Open Masters Championships at North Bay Pool, Scarborough earlier this month.
Emma Wills led the way securing 5 individual gold medals in the 50m and 100m backstroke; 100m and 200m freestyle; and the 200m individual medley. Emma joined up with team-mates Cheryl Midgley, Mandy Aitken, Carol Brown and Michelle Jenks to win further gold medals in the women’s medley and freestyle relays.
Emma was among eight event winning York swimmers, with Oliver Simpson (50m and 100m breaststroke), Scott Brown (50m and 200m freestyle), Colin Campbell (50m butterfly), Duncan Brown (100m IM, 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle), Mandy Aitken (100m IM), Chris Holmes (50m backstroke) and Carol Brown (50m backstroke and 50m freestyle) all gaining individual gold medals.
The team achieved a further 9 silver and 5 bronze medals across the day’s events.
The Yorkshire Open Masters Championships represent a high standard of competition and is one of the calendar highlights for Yorkshire masters swimmers. The widespread success across the team on an enjoyable day reflects the hard work and determination of the swimmers throughout the year.
