A trio of York City Baths Clubs swimmers competed at the British Summer Championships last week and brought home a clutch of medals and successes for their Club.
Harry Devlin, Lucy Nicholson and Marcus Walker, competed against the best swimmers from across the country at the event held last week at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. To qualify for the British Summer Championships, swimmers have to be ranked inside the top 24 in the UK, in their event.
Harry, who travels from his home in Leeds to train with the club, saw his hard work pay dividends when he won two silver medals, in the mens 16 years 100m and 200m Breaststroke, and was placed 4th in the mens 16 years 50m Breaststroke.
York City Baths Club Head Coach, Josh Spencer, said:
Harry has dedicated himself to training for this event over the last four months and it’s fantastic to see the result. He lives in Leeds and travels 70 miles to attend each session with York City Baths Club, which makes this achievement even sweeter. Harry has contributed so much to the training squad and is a great role model for all aspiring national swimmers in the City.
16 year old Harry was joined at the British Summer Championships by club mates, Lucy Nicholson, 16 and Marcus Walker, 14. All three swimmers rose to the occasion and raced hard, achieving new PB times. Lucy competed in the womens 16 years 400m Freestyle and 200m Butterfly. The York based swimmer won her heat in the 200m Butterfly, but was just touched out into 4th place in the final. Marcus competed in the mens 13/14 years 50m Breaststroke.
Lucy is back at Ponds Forge this week, competing in the ASA National Summer Championships alongside Club mates Jason Robson, 13, Neola Thorpe, 15 and 14-year-old Ella Fisher.
Club Chairman Steve Creighton spoke of the YCBC’s pride at the swimmers’ success in qualifying for and competing in both these national events:
We are immensely proud of our swimmers. To qualify for national finals is a tremendous achievement and for Harry to come away with two silvers, at the British Summer Championships, is phenomenal. We hope more medals will follow for the other YCBC swimmers competing at the ASA National Summer Championships this week.
