Earlier this month 5 YCBC swimmers took part in the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships at the London Aquatics Centre.
This was a fantastic new venue for the annual competition and there was tough competition for the qualifying places. The athletes had their scores combined for a non-consecutive swim and run (100m or 200m and 1600m respectively).
For the girls there were sisters Ellen, Carrie and Genna Suddes representing Huntington School and the boys were Sam Russell (Archbishop Holgate School) and Alistair Mitchell who now attends a sixth form college outside the city. Year 8 student Genna had her best ever finish coming 5th in this National competition. Her trophy was awarded by Mhairi Spence, GB Olympian and Women’s Modern Pentathlon World Champion. This performance helps to consolidate Genna’s place on the Pentathlon GB England Talent Programme. Carrie, Year 10, is returning from a long injury lay off and proved herself worthy of swimming in such a prestigious venue by finishing 45th, an improvement of more than 20 places on her qualifying position. Ellen, accompanied by Jess Isaacs from Fulford School (both Year 11), pulled out solid swim and run times and finished top 30 for the 4th consecutive year (she was 18th, Jess 19th).
The boys honours were taken by Ali Mitchell who finished 6th (Year 12), his best ever finish, posting speedy swim and run times. His performance was a reminder of why he has a place on the Pentathlon GB England Talent Programme. Year 9 Sam Russell provided us with the swim of the competition, a prompt to the remaining YCBC swimmers to maximise their efforts, with a blistering 100m freestyle in a time of 1.01.11. This gave him a 13th place to be proud of.
