The club was represented by 10 swimmers in the North East Regional Championships over the weekend of 3rd & 4th May 2014, at Sunderland Aquatics Centre.
Annie Johnston came 7th in the Women’s 200m butterfly with a final swim of 2:25.52, bettering her PB for the second time in the event. Freya Beck also came 7th, in the Women’s 200m backstroke. Whilst no other YCBC swimmer could make a final, there were some sterling performances from across the squad.
For the lads it was in backstroke where the best performances were to be found. Matthew Winnell had a strong 100m backstroke, coming a creditable 17th in the final standings, Ben Nicholson swam a personal best 2:27.44 in his 200m backstroke and Alex Riches an excellent 31.87, also a PB, in his 50m backstroke swim.
For the lasses, it was championship debutant Ellie Griffin who heads our line up. In both her 100m (1:22.53) and 200m (2:58.20) breaststroke swims, Ellie swam strongly to post PBs in both; not bad for her first ever swims in a 50m pool! Charisse Charlton put in a good 50m fly swim, whilst Carrie Suddes tried her best in her 100m breaststroke, but in an injury hit season was forced to sit out her 200m swim. Ellen Suddes swam a strong 2:51.29 in her 200m breaststroke, giving her 12th place, whilst Sophie Brown gave good 50m sprint performances in back, fly and free, as well as 1:01.70 in her 100m free swim being a good PB. Freya posted a strong 400m swim, to finish 13th in the final places, and Annie a good 100m butterfly, finishing 15th in the standings.
Annie, Sophie, Freya and Ellen (pictured) teamed up in both the 4 x 100 Free and Medley relay events. A collectively strong 4:14.77 in the free gave them 10th place, whilst sterling performances in the medley, recording 4:39.83, gave them a very creditable 7th place finish, and a fitting way to close these championships.
