The annual PAW Swimwear Yorkshire SA Championships were held over 4 consecutive weekends from 31st January to 22nd February 2015.

As one of the leading independent clubs in the county, York City Baths Club was well represented in the sprints on the first weekend, at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, by 32 swimmers across all age groups.

The Club is overjoyed to report that 11 year old Jason Robson and 17 year old Annie Johnston are now 2015 Yorkshire Champions in their relevant ages groups. Jason won gold in the 50m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly, whilst Annie was crowned winner in 50m Breaststroke. The pair made the finals in all their entered events, with Jason winning a further silver and bronze medal, whilst Annie took another bronze.

In all 13 swimmers made their way into their respective finals, with Katarina Bonner and Sam Russell achieving 3/4 individual final swims, a silver medal in the 50m Breaststroke being Sam’s highlight. There was also a well deserved bronze medal for Ellen Suddes in the 50m Breaststroke.

Our finalists were: Freya Beck, Katarina Bonner; Mollie-Jo Garratt; Beth Gibbons; Jacob Hardisty; Annie Johnston; Megan Kirkman; Samuel Pickup; Jason Robson; Sam Russell; Ellen Suddes; Kimberley Thompson; and Neola Thorpe.

Then came the Team events, with a change of venue to the John Charles Centre for Sports, Leeds.

YCBC entered a total of 18 different age group teams, 10 of which reached the finals. The highlight was the women’s open age group Freestyle team comprising Freya Beck, Katarina Bonner, Sophie Brown and Annie Johnston, who achieved a well deserved bronze medal.

Over the weekends of 14th/15th and 21st/22nd February 2015, the distance events (100m and longer) were also held at the John Charles Centre for Sport, Leeds. YCBC took a squad of 33 swimmers across all age groups.

Once again we are delighted to announce that 11 year old Jason Robson and 17 year old Annie Johnston were crowned 2015 Yorkshire Champions; Jason in the 100m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley, and Annie in the 200m Individual Medley, in their respective age groups.

Jason competed in a total of 11 events over both weekends, qualifying for 8 finals and 2 heat declared finals. In addition to his wins, he also gained 3 silver medals (100m Backstroke, 200m Breaststroke and 200m Butterfly), 4 bronze medals (100m Breaststroke, 100m Freestyle, 400m Freestyle and 1500m Freestyle) and narrowly missed out with a 4th place in the 200m Freestyle. Annie also put in a superb performance, making all 6 finals in her entered events. In addition to her win, she gained 2 silver medals (100m and 200m Breaststroke), a 5th (100m Butterfly), a 6th (200m Butterfly) and an 8th place (100m Freestyle).

Jason and Annie’s outstanding performances are testament to their hard work and commitment shown during training, and York City Baths Club applauds their achievements. Well done Jason and Annie!

15 year old Katarina Bonner also had a superb 2 weekends of swims, competing in 10 events, qualifying for 7 finals and 2 heat declared finals. Katarina achieved a magnificent haul of 3 silver medals (800m Freestyle, 200m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley) and 2 bronze medals (100m Butterfly and 200m Backstroke), along with 2 x 4th, and 6th and 7th places in her other finals.

17yr old Ellen Suddes claimed bronze in the 200m Breaststroke event and narrowly missed a 2nd medal in her other event, the 100m Breaststroke, finishing in 4th place.

Doing it for the boys, Regional Squad swimmer, 10 year old Samuel Pickup, competed in 5 events. He achieved a silver medal in the 400m Freestyle and a bronze in 200m Butterfly. With top ten finishes in his other events and a 100% Personal Best (PB) record, Samuel showed determination and drive, which we hope this will be a springboard to further success.

14 year old Sam Russell continued to show consistency in form, swimming in 9 events, with 6 final and 2 heat declared final performances achieved. Despite valiant swims, Sam just missed out on the medal places, finishing with 2 x 4th, a 5th, 2 x 7th, 2 x 9th and a 10th.
